Jack Dorsey Says Twitter Will Hold Trump Accountable When Congress Does

SWILLYCORN VALLEY, CALIFORNIA — There is no denying that President Donald Trump engages in behavior on the Twitter social media platform that would likely get him suspended from it, were he not the president.

Trump regularly threatens, abuses, and harasses other Twitter users and even people who aren’t on Twitter. A few weeks ago, Twitter said that even Trump is not above being thrown off their site. However, in a January 2018 blog post, Twitter made it abundantly clear that they have a second set of rules for people like Trump, simply because he’s a “world leader.”

Blocking a world leader from Twitter or removing their controversial Tweets would hide important information people should be able to see and debate. It would also not silence that leader, but it would certainly hamper necessary discussion around their words and actions. (Twitter)

Despite Twitter’s assurances that no one is above punishment or discipline on their platform, there have been numerous instances of Trump flouting the code of conduct Twitter says they enforce on all users. This inconsistency has been the focus of ire and outrage from Trump’s critics on both sides of the political divide.

Today, Dorsey made a “solemn promise,” as he put it, to the Twitter community, that he would “hold President Donald Trump accountable,” but with one pretty big catch.

“I’ve heard your comments and complaints loud and clear,” Dorsey told the Twitterverse via a blog post, “and I am here to make a solemn promise to you all right now that I will hold President Donald Trump accountable on Twitter just as soon as soon as Congress does.”

Dorsey’s blog entry says he’s not “putting the ball in any one political party’s court.” Instead, he said that members of both parties in both congressional chambers “have all the power they need to actually defend the Constitution first, and their party much, much later.”

“Either Nancy Pelosi will have to start caring more about the country than she does about the election, or Mitch McConnell will have to care more about the country than his party,” Dorsey writes. “So, obviously I’m not here to recommend that you hold your breath waiting for any of that to happen.”

While Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) delivered a blistering speech from the Senate floor this morning, pleading with Pelosi to start impeachment proceedings in the House, Dorsey was writing his blog entry that argued it “doesn’t make sense to hold him more accountable on social media than in Congress.”

“The bottom line is that until Pelosi and McConnell put the country ahead of their political careers, we have no reason to put the country ahead of our profit margins,” Dorsey said. “And if I can’t have a sixth vacation home, do we even live in America anymore, anyway?”

The offices of McConnell and Pelosi could not be reached for comment.
