Free Speech Defender Wants Teachers Arrested For Talking About Racism or Gay People In Florida

TALAHASSE, FLORIDUH — You would be hard-pressed to find a politician who professes his love of liberty and freedom of speech more than Gov. Ron DeSantis (Q-FL). DeSantis loves liberty so much that his administration’s COVID-19 prevention strategy has been to have no COVID-19 prevention strategy and allow residents in his state to slobber and sneeze on whatever they wanted to.

It’s DeSantis true, deep, abiding love for the First Amendment that he is most known for, in fact. Freedom of speech and expression, the cornerstone of a truly free society, is protected and enshrined in that amendment, which assures each American citizen that their government will not punish them for expressing a thought or opinion. Gov. DeSantis understands, however, maybe more than any other elected official, that in order to defend freedom of speech, from time to time it might be necessary to ban speaking about certain topics, especially in the classroom.

DeSantis has been a strong proponent of banning Critical Race Theory — a discussion and analysis of the role that deeply-rooted racist structures have played in American society — from all Florida classes. Conservatives like DeSantis have argued that CRT should be speech that is off-limits because it might force white parents to have conversations with their kids about the pictures in their history books showing grandma and grandpa taunting a young black girl going to public school for the first time.

But it’s not just discussions of race that DeSantis wants barred from classrooms.

This week, Gov. DeSantis signaled that he’d sign a new bill in his state, proposed by his fellow Republicans, that is being called the “don’t say gay” act. If passed and signed by DeSantis, the law would bar teachers from discussing sexuality or LGTBQ Americans in classrooms, effectively making discussions around the topic illegal.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis voiced his support for a bill that would prohibit the discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in the state’s primary schools.

Asked by reporters at a Miami event Monday, he said it was “entirely inappropriate” for teachers to be having conversations with students about gender identity, citing instances of them telling children, “Don’t worry, don’t pick your gender yet,” and also “hiding” classroom lessons from parents. Speaking at a recent campaign fundraiser and klan rally in Lake Chingadero, DeSantis outlined for donors why he believes his tenure in office has been “absolutely steadfast in its commitment to ending Cancel Culture and protecting freedom of expression.”

“There are some who would scratch their heads, maybe, at the idea of someone who has literally banned speech calling themselves a defender of free speech. I admit that some may say that,” DeSantis told his audience.

“Those people are pee-pee-caca-fart-fart heads, though, because they’re forgetting one thing: speech isn’t free if it hurts white evangelical feelings. It’s a rude assault on America, frankly, to acknowledge and discuss things that make us feel icky inside. I would argue that the speech that makes we non-pigmented lovers of bland food feel uncomfortable is the least free speech, for us. And in case anyone forgot, white Americans made this country, so we should get first say on what’s legal or illegal.”
