WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former President Barack Obama will be live-tweeting the first State of the Union address given by President Donald Trump, and word is that he will do so in the adoptive style of Trump himself.
“President Obama’s always had a dry sense of humor,” one source close to Obama said, “and he’s been thinking about a new career direction in comedy. So he’s using this as a dry run for trying out some new material and brushing up on his long form improv chops.”
For years, Mr. Trump was Obama’s chief antagonist. Trump tweeted and spoke to media outlets frequently that he had doubts about Obama’s birth certificate. Trump went so far as to say he’d hired people to investigate the accuracy of it, though it was never officially confirmed if that claim was true. The “Birther” movement was criticized widely as a racist reaction to the first black president, though many in the Republican Party’s base, and therefore Trump’s, still cling to the notion that Obama was not a naturally born U.S. citizen.
“For eight years he sat back and didn’t respond to any of the baiting from Trump, no matter how blatantly the racism dripped from his words,” one friend of Obama’s told us. “I think Barack’s relishing the idea of seeing how much of what he dishes Trump can take.”
Mr. Obama wants to ape Trump’s tweeting style for a number of reasons, friends say, but chief among them is the feeling Obama gets that Trump is trying to ride the coattails of his predecessor’s success, after a decade of trying to minimize the same accomplishments he’s taking credit for now.
“He decided to tweet like Trump because if Trump’s act like Obama’s achievements are his own, Obama might as well act like Trump,” one source said. “We all knew he was deadly with a drone, but who knew he could kill with jokes just as well?”
Obama thinks he can tweet like Trump fairly easily, sources are confirming.
“All he has to do is have someone smack him the head with a heavy book, or have a temporary frontal lobotomy, and chances are Trumpers won’t be able to tell the difference,” a source close to Obama says.
Of course, the tweets from Obama, even in the style of Trump, won’t be exactly like the 45th president’s tweets, for a number of reasons.
“Well, Obama has about twice as many followers than Trump does, and so that means they’re likely to be seen by a lot more people,” an Obama confidant told us. “Of course, Trump will still reach more Russian bots with his tweets, to be fair to him.”
