In Interviews on Fox News, Sinclair, and Bill O’Reilly’s Basement Podcast, Ted Cruz Says He Worries About Political Bias at Facebook

WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified before both the House and Senate in an effort to quell rising calls for immediate and swift regulation of the social media giant as fallout from the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

It was revealed in Zuckerberg’s testimony that more than 80 million users had their personal information sold to Cambridge Analytica after Facebook had taken them at their word that ill-gotten data would be deleted and not used. In one moment during Zuckerberg’s first day of testimony on the Hill, Senator Ted Cruz blasted what he called the platform’s “political bias,” insinuating that only conservative users and groups get targeted for suspension of even banishment from Facebook. Zuckerberg denied those allegations, citing his personal goal to keep Facebook from being too heavily tilted toward the left, despite being headquartered in Silicon Valley, widely believed to be a left-leaning area of the country.

Senator Cruz took to the airwaves of several media outlets and personalities this week to pour more fuel on the rhetorical fire.

“Now, Chet, let me tell you something,” Cruz, on Chet Chesterson’s midwestern regional television talk show which airs on conservative-leaning Sinclair Broadcasting channels, “I think there’s nothing more obvious than the fact that Mark Zuckerberg is personally banning Facebook accounts of conservatives. To deny this, even though I cannot produce any evidence to back my claim up in the slightest, is just patently absurd.”

Later in the day, Cruz appeared on Bill O’Reilly’s show that he broadcasts from his basement.

“Bill, there is nothing more dangerous than a media outlet that shamelessly censors facts that run contrary to their audience’s built-in biases,” Cruz said. “That’s what I was telling Timmy Lahren the other day when she was interviewing me for Fox News. I said to Tammy that the only news outlets I use are the ones that I know don’t censor conservatives. And by censor I mean not cater to. Because as the only real Americans in the country, conservative views should be coddled and protected and sheltered, if anything.”

Finally, Cruz ended his day by appearing on Tucker Carlson’s show on Fox News.

“Tucker, there is just an undeniable fact — Facebook caters to liberals and liberals only,” Cruz said. “They just will not let views that run contrary to what they themselves think or feel out onto their airwaves. Have you heard of anything so disgusting?”

Carlson made his trademark “Who put jizz in my soda?” face, indicating he was both deep in thought and in total agreement with Cruz.

“Clearly as a small government conservative I have to advocate for just one solution to the Facebook problem,” Cruz told Carlson. “I must insist the government take full control of Facebook’s algorithm. We just can’t trust them the same way we trust someone to deny service to gay people based on religious beliefs.”

Senator Cruz did not comment on this story.
