Yesterday, Americans awoke to the news that one of their former presidents was back in legal trouble.
One-term, twice-permanently impeached President Donald Trump’s company, the Trump Organization, has been indicted on several criminal counts by the New York City District Attorney. The company’s Chief Financial Officer has also been indicted. All of the charges are related to accounting and tax crimes, effectively accusing Trump’s company of tax evasion and helping its executives do the same. The Manhattan DA’s office had been investigating the Trump Organization for years, and these are the first round of indictments, however more indictments could be coming, particularly of the CFO signs a plea deal, agreeing to testify against Trump himself in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Some Americans might think that Trump has yet again managed to break norms and set a new precedent. However, it’s possible those Americans would be quite mistaken. Surely in nearly 250 years of history, there have been other presidents whose companies were indicted. In fact, we decided to do some research and publish all the companies owned by Trump’s immediate predecessor, Barack Obama, that were also indicted.
