WASHINGTON, D.C. — The vultures are beginning to circle Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and her position as the number three Republican in the House of Representatives.
With a vote potentially as early as this week, the House GOP conference is looking more and more willing to shove Cheney aside and install Rep. Elise Stefanik (Q-NY) in her place. Cheney’s position of power and good standing within the Republican Party has been threatened ever since she condemned former President Donald Trump for his role in inciting the violent insurrection and terrorist attempt to set aside the 2020 election back on January 6th, 2021.

When Cheney voted to impeach Trump because of the part he played in that deadly day’s events, she began to receive vociferous, incessant criticism from Trump’s most loyal devotees still on the Hill. Last week, the drama seemed to reach a zenith when House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy told Fox News he would support ousting Cheney in favor of Stefanik. This morning, though, McCarthy seemed to throw Cheney a lifeline.
“Look, as far as I’m concerned, Elise is our sycophant. But if Liz really wants to hold onto her position, and stay in our good graces,” McCarthy told reporters, “she still has time. All she has to do is pay for minors for sex. Or, she can go on OAN with the MyPillowGuy and agree with everything he says, maybe share a hit or two from the crack pipe with him like Margie Taylor Green does? Either one of these things would go a long, long way to getting Liz back on our good good side.”
Rep. McCarthy said Cheney had been “playing a dangerous game of truth telling and accountability” by continuing to criticize Trump for inspiring the riot.
“She could have simply shut up, spouted the party line, and nobody on our side would have felt any hesitation keeping her in a leadership role,” McCarthy said. “But she had to keep playing a dangerous game of truth telling and accountability. Liz knows Don Trump doesn’t do the A-word. He calls it the A-word because of how much he hates it, and also because he can’t read all that well. She made her bed, she has to lie in it.”
Rep. Cheney did not provide a response to Leader McCarthy before publication.
