Maybe the problem is me. Maybe I’m just an out of touch fuddy-duddy. But I’m a member of Generation X, and therefore my innate cynicism — combined with my desire to not overly think about anything for too long — has me believing that the problem isn’t with me; the problem is with bands that I used to love getting all political all of a sudden.
And I don’t like it.
There I am, about to watch the ball drop this past New Year’s Eve, and I catch wind that Green Day, a lovely little band from the California’s Bay Area that I have listened to for nearly 35 years now, was going to play a set. I got very excited, because if there’s anything I can count on from Green Day, it’s songs that are not in any way, shape, or form political. Because nothing is worse, for a middle-aged white man, than being bombarded with politics when we don’t want to talk about politics.
The best time to talk about politics, by the way, is when you’re on a first date and you want her to understand that you have strong feelings on what she should be legally allowed to do with her vagina.
All of a sudden, in the middle of their song American Idiot, I hear Green Day change the lyrics from “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” to “the MAGA agenda.” And once I stopped crying on the floor, I got real mad. Like, really, really mad.
Back in the Bush years, I never once heard any of this crazy left-wing messaging from Green Day! Just a bunch of songs about how America’s foreign and domestic policy was hijacked by religious extremists and right-wingers, and that was it! But now, all of a sudden, I’m getting slammed with overtly political messaging on New Year’s Eve?!
What’s next? Is Rage Against the Machine going to come out in favor of labor unions? Is N.W.A. going to come out against police brutality?! When will this madness all stop? We true blue, red meat eating, ammo hoarding, Christofascist religious extremist patriots need a break from all the woke leftist bullcrap, and if we can’t find respite from it in the likes of Green Day and Rage anymore, then we prolly don’t even live in America anymore, either.
