This week, a New York Supreme Court judge ruled that former President Donald J. Trump and two of his spawn must sit down for deposition, under oath, with the New York Attorney General’s office.

The order stipulates that the Trump family has twenty-one days to comply.

While it’s largely agreed upon by most legal pundits that Donald, Ivanka, and Donald Trump Jr. will likely assert their Fifth Amendment privileges against self-incrimination often, the ruling signals yet more legal trouble for the Trump Organization. Throughout his presidency, Trump’s business dealings came under harsher and more stringent scrutiny. Many believed he was so desperate to stay in office and fomented a failed coup attempt in part to stave off the impending peril that Attorney General Letitia James’ grand jury investigation was creating for the Trumps.

Now, with the deposition ordered, one question has come up — When will the Obama family sit down for their deposition with James? In an interview on MSNBC with Rachel Maddow last night, James answered that exact question.

“A lot of times it would be unethical or even illegal for me to speak about an ongoing case in such ways,” James told Maddow. “However, in this instance I can provide what is, I believe a satisfactory answer to that question. In short, I’m not forcing Barack, Michelle, Sasha, or Malia Obama to do a deposition because I don’t have any evidence that they run an organized crime outfit and regularly launder money and commit fraud.”

James paused for a moment for continuing.

“The short-short answer I guess is: Because they’re not fucking criminals. Are there any other questions Fox News viewers need me to answer? If not, they can get back to looking for Barack’s Kenyan birth certificate or whatever,” James laughed. “I’m gonna get back to figuring out if Don Trump is Al Capone but with pissy straw for hair and a lust for his own daughter, but only because that’s my job and shit, and some of us actually do the work we’re elected to do.”

Trump’s lawyers have already signaled they will appeal the ruling.
