HOLY OAK, VIRGINIA — Televangelist and social conservative Rev. Bill Millen appeared on television this week and addressed the swirling controversy around President Donald Trump and adult film star Stormy Daniels, saying that the scandal is all “Crooked Hillary and Barack Hussein Obama’s fault.”
Mr. Millen has long been one of the country’s loudest and most devout supporters of Mr. Trump. When many among the religious right were unsure whether to support Trump’s candidacy, Millen was one of the leading voices, urging his flock and American Christendom in general to overlook the alleged billionaire’s numerous foibles and questionable morals. Millen argued that keeping Clinton out of the White House was vital to making America safe and secure, and also in helping to one day overturning Roe vs. Wade, which he says is “literally the most worse thing America has done ever.”
“You’re a man of Christ, how can you possibly align yourself with Donald Trump,” Millen says he’s been asked by people on the street.
Rev. Millen is one of many among religious conservatives who have had to grapple with whether Trump’s previous sexual dalliances should disqualify him from being fit to serve as president. During the Monica Lewinsky scandal of President Bill Clinton’s second term, Millen was quite outspoken about Clinton’s sexual affairs being a “blight on humanity and every Christian American patriot.” But he doesn’t see Trump’s moral turpitude in the same way whatsoever.
Despite denying the affair for weeks, President Trump was essentially forced to cop to having one with Ms. Daniels and then paying her $130,000 to keep quiet about it in the run-up to the 2016 election. Ms. Daniels’ attorney, Michael Avenatti, has been aggressively pushing her story in the media, and perhaps surprisingly, Trump has not gone after Daniels or Avenatti directly, despite his willingness to attack just about everyone on Twitter and elsewhere. Michael Cohen, the Trump attorney who facilitated the non-disclosure agreement and payment, is currently in major legal hot water, and his office was the subject of a raid by the FBI in recent weeks.
Millen doesn’t care about any of that.
“He’s a Republican, okay? That makes this whole thing very different,” Millen would later tell a radio host in Ohio. “If you don’t understand how that’s true, well I just can’t help you. Abe Lincoln was a Republican. Ronald Reagan was a Republican. Jesus Christ himself was a card carrying, ammo hoarding Republican. God’s on our side, and that’s all that matters.”
